Uses of Computers in the Medical Field By: Tashauna Roberts Introduction In today’s society, there is a wide range of computer use. Almost everywhere you go today you are required to have some sort of basic understanding of how a computer is operated. In my report, I am going to tell you how computers are used in the field of medicine. There is a wide variety of use and need for a computer in the medical field. Their uses include storing patient related data, scanning and imaging the body, and assisting speedy communications. Hospital monitoring equipment is usually based on computer programming. Patient monitoring equipment is comput ers that leave the physician free to perform other duties. Emergency alarms, bed beeping systems, pacemakers, life support systems that monitor and look after patients, and X-ray machines are all examples of equipment using computer technology. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computer tomography (CT) use computer software. High resolution images are achieved with the use of computers and infrared cameras. Computers are also used in the medical field for Computer Assisted Surgery (CAS). The most important component of computer assisted surgery is to get an accurate model of the patient. This can be done like I said previously with a MRI, CT Scan, or Ultrasound. The final objective is the creation of a 3D dataset that reproduces the exact geometrical situation of the normal and pathological tissues and structures of that region. Of the available scanning methods, the CT is preferred, because MRI data sets are known to have volumetric deformations that may lead to inaccuracies. One of the most controversial topics in history is whether or not Hitler was a good leader; to this I say he wasn’t. During Hitler’s reign of power, more like reign of terror, he may have brought success to the world but none of it can undo his damage; none can ever compensate for the lives he took. Hitler was a terrible leader in that he manipulated the young, he was very hypocritical, and he caused the Jewish Holocaust. He used these â€Å"perfection† of people to become his base of support to help him carry out his barbaric attacks and later the holocaust. The young children did not know any better than to listen to their leader, so they acted without question, basically willingly helping him commit his sickening mass murder. The fact that he chose to manipulate younger children shows how pathetic he really was in that he wanted them because they were easier. Aside from his manipulating of innocent children to become his personal slaves, another reason he was a horrific leader was that he was a hypocrite. Hitler is most known for his act of murdering thousands of Jews because they were not blonde with blue eyes, but in reality, who is he to judge? Last time I checked, Hitler wasn’t even German but Austrian with black hair. This shows that he was an extremely racist man in that he attempted to take out an entire race because they were not his preferred ethnicity. This also shows that he was not fit to be a leader in that leaders are supposed to practice equality of all people, and are supposed to be of exemplary character. Seeing how he let his racist ways control him into committing such horrendous crimes just adds to how bad of a leader he really was. When someone first hears the name Hitler, there is usually a strong negative connotation that comes with it in that most people relate him directly to being the cause of the holocaust. The first reason he should never have been leader was that any person with such a sick and compulsive mind should never be in power. Already having such a fixed mindset, it should have been known that he would only do damage with his power. According to those around him, Hitler’s reasoning for the killing was that Jews were the cause of Germany’s problems. First of all, with no actual proof, it shows that Hitler acted on feeling instead of reason which obviously would only lead to downfalls. It also shows that he was a liar, and never should a country have such a ruler. Even if it is what he believed, it also shows he acted on impulse and simply what he believed instead of what was for the good of everyone. However, if he would still try to persuade people that he believed it really was for the good of all, it then just shows how he had the worst judgment and should not have been named ruler. Hitler was one of the worst rulers in our history because of his lack of good judgment and because of his wrong doings. Hitler gained support through the manipulation of innocent minds, which shows he was weak. He lived and spoke through hypocrisy, especially when he acted in killing thousands of Jews because of something they could not change. There were various reasons why the American Colonies were established. The three most important themes of English colonization of America were religion, economics, and government. The most important reasons for colonization were to seek refuge, religious freedom, and economic opportunity. Persecution punishment included jail and even execution. To seek refuge, they separated to go to Holland because of its proximity, lower cost, and safer passage. However, their lives in Holland were much different than that of England. The Separatists did not rebel against but rather preferred the English culture. They did not want their children to be raised Dutch. Also, they felt that Holland was too liberal. Although they enjoyed the freedom of religion, they decided to leave for America. Pilgrims, or sojourners, left for America on The Mayflower and landed in Cape Cod in 1626. They had missed their destination, Jamestown. Being a serious point of debate for many decades now, there are people who approve of it claiming it provides humane death for someone otherwise not capable of living a normal life anymore. On the other hand, there are others who stay conservative and disapprove of euthanasia believing that in no way can people decide should another person is already bound for death or not. One point of contention is the differentiation between active and passive euthanasia, which further segments the population. Gay-Williams assert that active euthanasia is illegal yet passive euthanasia can be morally favored. Some do not believe on the differentiation and say that whether it is active or passive, euthanasia should be regarded as illegal. Gay-Williams also argued that euthanasia takes out the hope in a patient. This further proves the negative notion on euthanasia. This along with the argument that euthanasia is a practical choice for medical practitioners is raised by the author and was explained in detail. This paper aims to discuss these arguments and evaluate their strength, which may prove or otherwise disprove the motions of Gay-Williams. In developing the paper, it hopes to evaluate euthanasia in light of its moral viability; the distinction cited between active and passive euthanasia and their moral statures, and two arguments that embody mercy killing: the argument that states how euthanasia affects the will to live and survive as well as how it may be used for practical applications—rather surprising conclusions that were taken by Gay-Williams which are worth a lengthy point of discussion, evaluation, and comparison. Passive and active euthanasia Gay-Williams stated that there is a big difference between passive and active euthanasia. In phrases, passive euthanasia is letting die while active euthanasia is killing. It should be noted that passive euthanasia happens when a person was not given relief from a certainly fatal situation which is otherwise medically alterable. For instance, a person with extreme difficulty in breathing who can still be resuscitated but was not given an apparatus or aid for the purpose may die under the circumstance of passive euthanasia. This is often done when there is an order by the patient or the family that the patient should not be resuscitated. Alternatively, the situation can be the other way around. The patient may be in a dying situation, but still technically alive. The author stated that this is killing even if the purpose of the act is to save someone from a lengthy and costly suffering. The thought of euthanasia Every one of us is gifted with survival instincts. When the going gets tough, they say the tough gets going. And so when an illness hits someone and he is tough enough, he finds hope rather than despair. He focuses on the positive rather than the negative and strives to find a way to battle the sickness and eventually win it. Thus, when the mind says that it wants to live, the body and the person will most likely follow. (How to live a longer and healthier life, 2007) This is the same argument raised by Gay-Williams as an issue of euthanasia. He states: knowing that we can take out our life at anytime (or ask another to take it) might well incline us to give up too easily. The will to live is strong in all of us, but it can be weakened by pain and suffering and feelings of hopelessness. This will to live is essential as many doctors have proven. Gay-Williams himself stated that there are many miraculous survivals that occur which even medicine cannot fully explain. Many shows, testimonials, and books have discussed how people in the brink of death were able to miraculously survive. Some were from serious illnesses or were declared in comatose. Some claimed to be back from dying. This relationship between the will to live and getting well has been the premise of many studies. Doctors started incorporating psychological therapies to their patients’ treatment plans hoping to get better results. Often, the results even exceed their expectations. This led many doctors to adapt the concept, to the relief and advantage of thousands and maybe even millions of patients around the world. As Gay-Williams says: The very presence of the possibility of euthanasia may keep us from surviving when we might. Euthanasia and practical effects Gay-Williams state that doctors and nurses’ main thrust and aim in their professions is to save lives, and that when a patient dies in their care it becomes a personal failure which may not be too easy to accept. Thus it is not surprising if the author argued that euthanasia is a practical way for practitioners to avoid this quicksand. If they endorse or support euthanasia, any impending deaths in their care can be pre-empted—no one will ever die in their responsibility again. Euthanasia is a product of free will. It takes the patient and/or his family into a higher level of decision-making whereby they choose whether to prolong the patient’s illness and let live or end the suffering and let the patient die in peace. Its proponents agree that approving euthanasia as a social policy lets the people exercise the freedom of will that was given to them by the divine and the constitution. This is true in that even if euthanasia becomes a social policy, it still boils down to the decision of the person if euthanasia should be chosen or not as a way of getting out of one’s suffering. If a patient or his family does not want to exercise it, it is also for them to decline. However, Gay-Williams claim that euthanasia will bring an all new low in the quality of healthcare where euthanasia is acceptable. The quality will be sacrificed because if practitioners know an easier way out of an untreatable disease rather than letting the patient die naturally in their hands, the process may be taken in non-serious cases as well. In connection, Gay-Williams stress that as a social policy euthanasia will bring worse concerns. For one, it can permit authorities to eliminate those who are hopelessly ill, the way those who are mentally ill are sent in mental hospitals—a comparison Gay-Williams was clever in making. Conclusion So did Gay-Williams’ argument win or lose? The argument revolved around the innate willingness to live by people, especially the sick. With these arguments, Gay-Williams reiterated that whether as a social policy or an open option for patients, families, and medical practitioners, euthanasia is a slippery slope where no one wins. Gay-Williams, theoretically speaking, was able to deliver his points well. It is true that euthanasia is an exercise of free will, but the fact that free will is given and thus the idea of euthanasia is suggested to a patient is already initially detrimental to the patient. It entails responsible choices to be made by the patient, the family, and the doctors. It requires a full understanding of life, and the willingness to allow life to take its course. The doctors can suggest this graceful exit option to the patient or the family but if the patient or the family’s will to live or let live is stronger than the will to end everything, euthanasia becomes out of the options and medication can continue. But if the patient or the doctors already have the way out it will be too tempting to resist. (A plea for beneficent euthanasia, n. d. ) Even if euthanasia is unwise for conservatives, it is a matter of choice and conscience. For the unbelievers, they can go through life without considering it. For modernists, it is an available choice. In the end, one should never and can never decide for another. Gay-Williams failed to include this in his distinctions. It is true that it can be used by doctors as a practical way out of a medical case, or disillusion patients, but it should still be a choice given for all.

Act III moves the play along and heightens the intensity, drama and tension between the characters. The plot of the play pans out as the act provides the audience with a skeleton of the time frame in the play; and hence a great sense of urgency. In my own opinion, I feel that the later two scenes (scene three and four) are the most capable of tracking the audiences feelings about Othello. Scene three is one of the longest scenes, consisting of 480 lines and entrances and exits. Shakespeare has to keep up the relentless pace to remove opportunity for questions to creep into Othellos mind. Othello can be seen as a victim of Iago in this scene, and evidently it is widely referred to as the temptation scene. The scenes previous to this are almost engulfed with conversation in which Iago manipulates Othello and aggravates him by speaking of something which only Iago knows. Othellos short fuse almost reaches its end in scene three as he is driven to madness with curiosity; he exclaims I prythee, speak to me as to thy thinkings. Critics have commented on the similarities between this scene and the biblical scene with Eves original sin in the Garden of Eden. Eve is driven by curiosity and temptation, leading her into eating the sinful apple. Likewise Othello cannot bear to knowt a little. Iago is able to manipulate many characters so skilfully that they seem to be acting simultaneously of their own freewill. For example, it only takes the slightest prompting on Iagos part to put Othello into the proper frame of mind to be consumed by jealously. This theme immerses most of the play; consequently resulting in its tragic nature. Iago is the antagonist and he relishes in the pain he causes. In Act three, scene three he quotes: Dangerous conceits are in their natures poisions Which at the first are scarce found to distaste But with a little act upon the blood Burn like the mines of sulphur. Furthermore, much of the action in act three works coincidently in Iagos favour and contributing to Othellos anger. A very good example of this is, in scene three Othello says: I swear tis better to be much abusd than but to knowt a little. And Iago is fortunate to find himself alone with Othello at this key moment; which may be attributed to Desdemona having gone too far in her insistent demands on Cassios behalf. She is of course, unaware of the impression that this is further imprinting on Othellos mind, due to the seed planted by Iago (of Desdemona and Cassios connection). Anyhow, Desdemona aids Iagos case by being excessive and therefore arousing suspicion. In addition, Iago is canny and does not poison Othellos mind with utter lies but he simply twists reality and the harmless actions of the other characters; in order to anger Othello. Othello becomes Iagos sufferer as Iago exploits Cassios discomfort upon seeing Othello by interpreting it as a sign of guilt. Thus, Iago victimises Othello, by wearing down his self-sufficiency and using Desdemonas kind nature and regard for others (Cassio) to work against her; and thus lead Othello further into doubt. I feel that Othello is a direct product of Iagos scheming in Act three, causing the audience to feel sympathetic in one way, towards Othello, and also frustrated and exasperated at how he is so easily mislead. In my opinion, it cannot be denied that Othello is a victim of Iago as Othello himself even touches on this idea. The audience understand how Othello is tortured by jealousy as he uses images that recall Iagos words: If there not be cords or knives, Poison or fire, or suffocating streams, Ill not endure it. Would I were satisfied. Iago acts as the malcontent in the play and so inflicting torture and suffering on the other characters, in particular our protagonist. Following on from Iagos mistreatment of Othello and almost definitely as a consequence of it; Othellos love turns to loathing. It is an interesting, complex and catastrophic turn of events as Othellos love and consideration for his wife turns into distasteful hatred. It is not completely unexpected as Othello shows worrying signs of overwhelming love for Desdemona. Bradley quoted His (Iagos) thwarted sense of superiority wants satisfaction and He is the spirit of denial of all romantic values. Thus contributing to the belief that Iagos manipulation and twisted influence deeply warps our tragic heros romantic thoughts and feelings. Iago holds such an undeniably strong presence in Othellos life. He is the antagonist and leaves Othello confused and with no reason not to believe him. There is a great deal of evidence in the play to suggest that the noble protagonist is pushed towards emotional turmoil and contorted thoughts by ruthless Iago. Iago quotes that cuckold lives in bliss and if it be hers (the handkerchief that he claims that Cassio had) or any that was hers; It speaks against her with the other proofs. However it is plausible that an audience might be reduced to disliking Othello due to his change from love to loathing. A confident, noble man at the beginning of the play, Othello changes from Act three onwards; as he is manipulated by Iago into believing Desdemonas infidelity. This transforms Othellos nature and language into barbaric and somewhat hell-like . Upon reflection of the beginning half of the play, Othellos language presents a very different man. Let us remember the beginning of the play, where Othello portrays himself as a virtuous man possessing a composed nature. This is evident through his speech in Act I Scene III to the Duke of Venice regarding Brabantios accusations of witchcraft toward him. Othello uses poetic and wise language which connotes his rational manner. Although stating Rude am I in my speech Othello presents his humble nature when compared to Brabantio. Othello offers judicious and romanticised language during his speech, describing his how he came to marry Desdemona as a unvarnished tale deliver of my whole course of love. This is a direct contrast to the Othello we are met with in Act three. In Act III, the transformation of Othellos personality and also his language is obvious. Finally, as Othello becomes more confident of his wifes unfaithfulness, his language reflects his fury toward her as he vows revenge on her. In using hell imagery he compares his recent hatred for Desdemona with the venom of aspics tongues which show his negativity toward her and also through his desire to tear her all to pieces! His language mirrors how disturbed he is, turning the audience against him, as he is unmovable in his opinion of Desdemona and he vows revenge against her. It is most significant that his language begins to reflect that of Iago as he no longer speaks poeticallty, of his love and of his glorious career as a soldier in the same vein. Instead he seems to have picked up on Iagos harsh and crude language. Othello soon refers to his wife as whore and then lewd minx in Act III scene three. He speaks graphically and sexually, which is often associated with Iagos linguistic; Othello asks Were they as prime as goats and hot as monkeys.. He again talks speaks crudely of Desdemona as he quotes I had been happy if the general camp, Pioneers and all, had tasted her sweet body.. As an audience we do not expect to witness such derogatory and filthy language from Othello, our tragic hero. It is also important to remember that an Elizabethean audience would have been disgusted and would have linked this change in Othello as him shedding his true colours as a black person. Lastly, Othellos plans for Desdemona and Cassio leave the audience feeling disappointed and aghast at the sinister capability of the supposed hero in the play. Up until this point in the play, Othellos character and make-up had shown classic signs of the misunderstood, isolated character whom everyone had initially interpreted wrongly. As an audience we are disappointed to witness Othello speaking so maliciously about the woman he previously proclaimed to have loved. Othello now cannot be forgiven or excused as simply being a product of Iagos plans; as he makes his own devious and calamitous plans. He calculates like a real assassin, Within these three days let me hear thee say That Cassiod not alive and he decidedly quotes I will withdraw to furnish me with some swift means of death for the fair devil. This is a turning point for the audiences every respect and high esteem of Othello. In conclusion, I feel that Act III would have left the audience with a new depiction of Othello. Throughout this Act Othello is no longer the noble, courageous and decent man that we know him as. He presents a more cowardly man, who is easily manipulated by Iago and is easily reduced to very low levels. Othello is definitely less likeable following Act III as he becomes accustomed to derogatory language, he is consumed by jealousy and revenge; and thus he is transformed from a benign and compassionate soldier and husband to a rancorous, erratic assassin. Consequently by the end of Act III, Othello would have conformed to the stereo-type Moor of the time; proving the Elizabethan audience correct in their probable initial impressions of the black soldier. Nonetheless, there is however the possibility that Act three would have left Shakespeares audience feeling ever so slightly sympathetic towards the protagonist. Since, an Elizabethan audience would have understood the weight Othello attaches to his reputation, pride and therefore anger at Desdemona. In Shakespeares day a mans honour was extremely important and his wifes chastity was an integral part of it.
